HICCSTRID FOR HOGWARTS AU

avannak:

Hiccstrid Hogwarts AU Headcanons (taken from this setting) **Reminder that Hogwarts exists when HTTYD takes place which means FoUnDeR iNtErAcTiOn <3**

  • Hiccup develops a crush on Astrid somewhere between his second and third year at Hogwarts. She’s pretty and she’s popular amongst her peers and she’s a talented flier. Hiccup loves flying.
  • Hiccup never gets up the courage to join Astrid when he sees her on the pitch to squeeze in some extra personal practice. Instead he often goes out at night, by himself, when it’s just him and the sky and he can do as he pleases. He thinks “Tomorrow, I’ll join her. Tomorrow I’ll fly in front of people.” He never does.
    • And in a fit of insecurity during the end of his first year of Hogwarts, wondering if he even belonged in Gryffindor after getting publicly put down by his cousin, Godric himself takes a seat besides Hiccup and calls him “brave” for “defying his curfew rules”.
  • Astrid makes Hiccup nervous enough that, despite being generally good at Care of Magical Creatures, he often messes up and causes her injury. She thinks him a klutz and annoying.
  • Astrid makes captain of the Hufflepuff Quiddich team in her fourth year. Hiccup sees all the games, often dragging Fishlegs to them. Fishlegs complains. He’s finding other interests–gobstones, charms club–and Hiccup feels a rift grow between them.
  • They’re partnered for potions at the beginning of fifth year and it lasts approximately one month and four destroyed cauldrons before they’re reassigned. Astrid, Hiccup finds, isn’t great at everything. She’s quick to finish a potion and often misses key steps. He’s panicky and utters corrections against her affronted glare and tries not to focus on how she smells or her proximity. He often tries to grab ingredients and pairing knives from her before its too late, only to cause a bigger mess.
  • At the start of their sixth year, Hiccup isn’t on the train. He doesn’t arrive until mid October. He’s different. The founders pay extra attention to him, speaking favorably to him, and it gets Astrid’s attention. She hears rumors that he fought a dragon over the summer. She hears rumors that he’s been in hospice all this time, which might explain why he seems thinner. Thinner… but standing taller.
  • Hiccup becomes much more involved with school. He begins to excel in certain classes–Runes, Transfiguration, CoMC. He becomes slightly more social. Astrid sees him speaking to professors outside the classroom. Once she even hears him telling a couple younger Gryffindors the best way to get a tighter curve when flying and she snorts. Hiccup didn’t play quiddich.
  • When they’re partnered–again, tentatively–in potions, Hiccup’s calmer. Something has him grounded, something has him more self-assured, and now he can gently correct her every time she nearly blows up their cauldron. Yet there’s still something that irks Astrid in the dry way he tells her what to do.
  • After a particularly rough Quiddich game (won, of course), Astrid is sent to the Hospital Wing to have a broken hand checked out. She bumps into Hiccup, who seems to be limping on his way out and clutching a tonic. He gives her a shaky smile.
  • It’s the evening before the Yule holidays and Astrid decides to get one last fly in before she’s grounded for two weeks, living just beyond a muggle village. Something nearly bowls her over–a streak that ruffles a scream from her lips. She catches her breath, looks around, and eventually spots Hiccup, on a broom, hovering feet above her.
    • “You’re never out this late,” he says. He’s not smiling.
    • Gathering her wits as best she can, Astrid tries to demand an explanation, adding on that he could have killed her, to which he responds with, “It’s nearly curfew” before zipping off over the Forbidden Forest as though such a curfew didn’t apply to him.
    • Astrid doesn’t follow because he’s right. It’s nearly curfew.
  • After winter break, Astrid partners with Hiccup in Ancient Runes. She wants to know about that night, about his flying. He’s got healing scrapes on his cheeks. He shrugs and says he just enjoys it. Astrid wants to fly with him; she wants to make sure it wasn’t a fluke that he seemed so at ease on a broom.
  • He agrees on dusk and it quickly becomes an evening of breathless races. Hiccup makes dives at the lakes and pulls insane twists and jumps and Astrid is almost hesitant to follow. They begin flying together more. Astrid gets him to fly a little earlier as she refuses to break the rules. She needles him about his “sky shy” issues and why he doesn’t want anyone to see him.  She begs him to try out for quiddich. He refuses.
    • “Flying is for me,” he says. “Not for them.”
  • They fly several times a week. They’re partnered in two joint classes and begin doing homework together. Hiccup practically tutors Astrid in Potions and she returns the favor by helping in him DADA. Hiccup, Astrid learns, has some crazy, albeit brilliant, interests in spell creation. She learns he’s inventive and sarcastic and, in his own way, rather funny.
  • At the end of their sixth year, Hiccup invites Astrid to spend some of her summer at his mother’s new dragon reserve. He teases her, saying he could teach her how to “really fly”. She takes him up on it, of course.
  • That’s when she meets Toothless. That’s when she learns of Hiccup’s leg–that he had lost it the summer before, defending a nearby village from a wild and extremely dangerous dragon. It’s then, while he’s at his most vulnerable, most exposed, that Astrid feels something far fonder than friendship for him.
  • They arrive in seventh year with a budding relationship.
  • Godric Gryffindor is the biggest Hiccstrid shipper in Hogwarts because he spent years heckling Helga over taking “what should have been his” (aka, Astrid) and he was delighted to have one of his Lions with her.
