Things I am Thankful For

womantryingtoexist:

It is time for some fandom positivity! And so I want to list a few things I was really thankful for in The Raven Cycle:

  1. Their character flaws. Each one of the main cast was a flawed human being (Noah being somewhat of a special case due to his deathness). But they never felt like a character with a character sheet full of attributes and disadvantages ticked off. They feel three-dimensional. That`s why this fandom got so relatively big for a book fandom.
  • Adams flaw is his pride, but it is also what made him move on and out. Gansey is oblivious and privileged, but this is also what made it possible for him to achieve his quest. Blue is stubborn and contradictory, but that is also what fuels her feminism and her will to act. Ronan is elusive and living on the edge, but that is what makes him breath.
  • They are complex and interesting and sometimes contradictory. But that is what makes them great and real and lovable.
  1. Just Adams story line and journey through the books. I think I don`t have to say too much about it since other creators wrote essays that explain this so much better. But you know… Adam Parrishs character development.
  2. Everything about status and privilege and the fact that it never goes away. Like, there is conflict about money between Gansey and Ronan on one side, and Adam and Blue on the other side fore the whole duration of the books. Adam and Blue are constantly reminded about their status while going on adventures. It is never played down. And this beautiful sentence is uttered: You don`t have to think of money, Gansey, unless you have none of it.

I just… love this series. And these are a few of the reasons why!
